LOWER DOLPO TREK
The focal point of the Dolpo area is Shey Phoksundo National Park. The east and south of it is bordered by the Dhaulagiri and Chure Himal ranges and to the west by the Jumla district. Trekking to Lower Dolpo offers you the much of the same remarkable and worthwhile experiences as the Upper Dolpo Trek, but it is of shorter duration. The noteworthy features seen on this excursion are the immaculate snowy peaks, ancient and isolated villages, rich wildlife, Buddhist monasteries, and turquoise lakes. The people of this area are simple and warm-hearted with an enthralling culture and ancient heritage. The cultural traditions of this area are basically linked with Tibet. Trekking into this region gives you exposure to the high and isolated Himalayan valleys, which resemble the Tibetan highlands. The major highlight of this trek includes “Shey Phoksundo National Park” which is the largest National Park of Nepal. “Shey Phoksundo Lake” is, for most, the jewel of this region. The lake is totally free of aquatic life, which the crystal clear water clearly explains. Surrounded by rock, forests, and snow-capped peaks, the area has been described as one of the World's “Natural Hidden Wonders”. The trek begins at Juphal and follows the trail to Dunai, then proceeds to Tarakot, way up to Bang La Camp, the highest point of the trek. After passing through Sanu Bheri village, we then descend to the beautiful Phoksundo Lake itself.

Dolpo region has been permitted for trekkers since mid-1989 and located inside the Shey-Phoksundo National Park of mid-western Nepal. The region offers opportunities to visit ancient villages, high passes, beautiful Lakes, isolated Buddhist monasteries and also to experience the vast array of wildlife inhabiting the region, including Blue sheep, Mountain Goat, Jackal, Wolf and the legendary Snow Leopard. Trekkers relatively rarely visit the remote and wild district of Dolpa and yet it offers a wonderful chance to experience the landscape and culture far different from that seen in other parts of the country. This remote and rugged protected area is both scenically and culturally attractive. The trek passes through Shey-Phoksundo National Park for which an entry permit must be achieved in addition to the trekking permit. The lake is quite large being around five kilometers long and one kilometer wide where glaciers enter directly into the lake feed crystal clear waters.
